Where to Stay During your Visit to Radda in Chianti | A Review of Palazzo Leopoldo Dimora Storica & SPA

If you’ve added wine tasting in the Tuscan countryside to your Italian itinerary, you will not be disappointed. We visited during February, so off-season for Italian vineyards, and had the most magical time in Radda in Chianti.

The town was essentially empty other than a few locals there. Giving us the beautiful Italian streets and vineyards to ourselves.

Part of what made our stay in Radda in Chianti so perfect was choosing to stay at the Palazzo Leopoldo Dimora Storica & SPA. This beautiful and historic Italian charm resort was a magical experience.

How’s the location of the Palazzo Leopoldo Dimora Storica & SPA?

The Palazzo Leopoldo is in the beautiful, picturesque Italian town of Radda in Chianti. This is a perfect place to visit if you are looking to try some Italian Chiantis, as it is in the Chianti region of the Tuscan countryside.

There are several wineries and vineyards around the Palazzo Leopoldo, however, I do recommend a car as they are not within walking distance.

How’s the room at the Palazzo Leopoldo Dimora Storica & SPA?

The rooms are adorable! It almost feels like you go back in time with some more vintage furniture. Even the key to the room is like going back in time.

Each room is a little different which makes it a fun experience when traveling with friends, OR if you ever come back to visit and have a different room.

We stayed in the Deluxe room with windows that opened up to the view of the Tuscan countryside. The room was very large with vintage furniture with a personal touch because it was different than the other rooms we saw!

We had an amazing modern bathroom with an old stained door (I was obsessed with this door, I literally took so many pictures of it), a massive bed, and a kitchenette that was inside of an armoire.

What is there to do at Palazzo Leopoldo Dimora Storica & SPA?

The Palazzo Leopoldo offers wine tastings, cooking classes, a spa, and different excursions that you can book through the resort. The excursions are offered by bike, Vespa, horseback, or on foot.

The town is a must-walk through. Check out the beautiful streets, cute restaurants, and little markets. There are tons to see just inside the town. Plus, it is less crowded than others cities in Italy (depending on when you go) so it gives you a more local feel.

You can grab a bottle of wine from a store in the city or at the hotel and enjoy it on the balcony of the resort. It has a beautiful view of the Tuscan countryside. We did this in February and the weather was still perfect.

We weren’t able to check out the spa, but based on looking at the pictures — you should totally squeeze in time if you can! It would be a perfect way to rest on your vacation if you’ve been traveling for a while too.

We did the cooking class and a wine tasting that was offered through the resort. We booked them at the time of booking our stay as well. Both were fabulous and really contributed to our stay here.

We also did a self-guided winery tour, check out 3 of the ones you should visit in Radda in Chianti here! I highly recommend renting a car and checking out some of the local spots around town — these likely won’t be wines you will find at home and it’s an awesome experience, it may even turn you into a wine drinker ;).

Cooking Class

In true Italian fashion, the cooking class came with SO much food that we weren’t even able to finish all of it. The meals were picked by our chef specifically for our class with just bought fresh ingredients.

The class was about 4 hours long, with 4 courses, a bottle of wine per 2 people, and great conversation. The time flew by. You are also able to eat throughout the cooking class as things become ready, so you won’t be starving for 4 hours — come hungry!

The chef was so knowledgeable and kind. She had great recommendations for different wineries for us to check out in the area. She also provided us with all the recipes for everything that we made so that we could remake the meals at home.

The cooking class at Palazzo Leopoldo was definitely at the top of all our favorite memories of our trip to Italy and may have been top 3 best meals — which is saying a lot, if you’ve ever had Italian food it’s amazing.

Wine Tasting

The wine tasting was in a room downstairs and had about 5 wines from the area along with some different cheeses and a jam to pair with each wine. A few of the wines were from Albola, which is a winery that you can see on my wineries to visit in the Radda in Chianti area blog here!

The Sommelier for our tasting was very passionate and knowledgeable about the wine we were trying. The way he described the wine and his personality made the class so much more enjoyable — we even stayed after to talk to him for a bit.

He picked the 5 wines we would be trying that night and guided us through different ways to take in the flavors of the wines, i.e. trying them with the food and without.

I will say that going to the wineries themselves is a whole other experience and should not be missed so you shouldn’t replace traveling to the wineries with this wine tasting. But, it is very fun and you should do it! Plus, it’s nice trying wines and being right in your bed for the night.

How much does staying at the Palazzo Leopoldo Dimora Storica & SPA cost?

We paid just over 625 USD for the Deluxe room for 2 nights, wine tasting, a bottle of wine, and a cooking class! It really felt like a steal. However, we did stay in the off-season of February and just shortly after the country opened up from COVID restrictions. So I’m sure prices will vary, be sure to check out current prices before booking.
