How to Spend 4 Days in Slovenia | Slovenia Travel Itinerary

Slovenia is such a beautiful and culture-rich adventure destination. It is full of stunning nature and beautifully kind people.

Slovenia gives me serious Switzerland vibes, but without the price tag. It certainly is one of the most underrated countries in Europe and I don’t think it will stay that way.

Let me start this by saying that 4-days in Slovenia is not enough time — if I could have stayed longer, I definitely would have! BUT, Slovenia is a very small country so you can still get a good feel for the country in 4-days! Making Slovenia the perfect addition to your Eastern European road trip.

So let’s get into how to spend 4 days in Slovenia!

Day 1: Ljubljana

I think Ljubljana makes an excellent hub for exploring the country of Slovenia. Slovenia is small enough that you can see a lot of it with little travel time, especially if you are centrally located.

There’s a bus station in Ljubljana that has daily trips to different spots throughout the country and also to other countries around Europe. So I think it makes for the perfect city to start and end your trip in Slovenia.

Starting off your Slovenia trip in Ljubljana puts you in the perfect location with plenty to do! Take this day to enjoy some delicious Slovenian food and try some Slovenian wine (seriously so good).

Check out Metelkova City! It’s a squatter city within Ljubljana full of graffiti and art. I loved just walking around this place, there is so much to look at. I wasn’t able to check it out at night but I heard it’s a really cool spot for a few drinks at night too.

Day 2: Lake Bled

Lake Bled is a MUST add to your 4 day in Slovenia itinerary! Lake Bled’s views are fairytale-like. You have beautiful European streets, a breathtaking lake, and a magical cliff with a castle at the top. It is full of adventure activities like zip lining, skiing/snowboarding during winter, tobogganing during summer, swimming, hiking, and so much more!

I really feel like it’s a perfect place for adventure travelers, solo travelers, and travelers who just want to relax while enjoying good food and wine. It really has something for everyone.

The best thing about Lake Bled is that it’s not completely run over by tourists (yet, keep your fingers crossed it stays this way). Obviously, you will get crowds— beautiful places bring in crowds, but it is nothing like other places in Europe.

Lake Bled is easy to get from Ljubljana by bus (a little over an hour and about 6 euros) or by driving (about 45 minutes). The proximity to Ljubljana makes it a perfect day trip spot without feeling rushed! There is no shortage of things to do, so you can stay longer if your schedule permits.

Day 3: Day Trip to Postojna

Postojna is home to one of Europe’s largest show caves. In fact, Slovenia has the most caves in Europe! Postojna is a 45-minute drive or about an hour bus ride from Ljubljana which makes it another effortless day trip from the city.

The Postojna Cave is truly remarkable. It is such a unique experience, unlike anything I have experienced before. There is a legit chandelier and train inside this cave because it is huge!

The 90-minute tour includes a train ride into the cave, a 1.5 km walk, and then a train ride out. This is a guided tour. The tour is offered in several different languages!

TIP: Make sure you wear or bring warmer clothing for the tour. The caves are about 10 degrees Celsius or 50 degrees Fahrenheit!

When booking your ticket, make sure you check the times — the tours start at specific times so if you want to plan your day without much wasted time, this is important! However, there is a lot to do at this park if you are there early. There are food options, little bars, desserts, coffee shops, and tons of nature to walk around before your tour.

I booked a ticket that gave me entry to the caves and the Predjama Castle. The castle is about a 10-minute drive from the Postojna Cave. They will call you a taxi if you don’t have a car.

The Predjama Castle was honestly SO much cooler than I thought it was going to be. It is literally a castle built inside of a cave! It is stunning and mind-blowing! You can get a free audio guide headset at the beginning to help guide you through the castle.

TIP: Wear some comfortable shoes, because this day is a ton of walking! Between the caves and the *extremely* steep steps in the castle!

You can use their website to book your tickets in advance and check out the schedule!

Day 4: Explore Ljubljana

There is honestly so much to do and see just within Ljubljana. Part of why I recommend using it as a hub city, especially if you don’t have a car. The food is excellent, there are exceptional viewpoints and nice wine bars, plus it’s easy to get around! I also felt extremely safe as a solo female traveler in Ljubljana.

I ended my trip here so that I could easily catch the bus the next morning to Croatia! So it’s also a perfect spot to end your Slovenian journey if you are planning on hopping around Europe some more.

Take this day to check out Ljubljana castle or at least hike up and see the city from above. Or ride a boat down the river. Check out the infamous three bridges. Have a gelato in front of the famous pink church.

Then end your perfect 4 days in Slovenia at a great wine bar to enjoy some Slovenian wine, I really liked Dvorni Bar!

Other Day Trip Options for Ljubljana:

There really is so much to do and see in Slovenia — so much I didn’t get to see but can’t wait to do when I return!

If the day trips I put above don’t tickle your fancy, maybe check out some of the other really great options like:

  • The Slovenian Coast: Piran, Izola, or Portoroz.

  • Slovenian “Tuscany”: Goriska Brda

    • Seriously looks like Italy from the pictures I saw, I really wanted to try to make a day here work but just couldn’t work it. Let me live through your trip there!

  • Mountain town of Kranjska Gora, especially if you’re visiting in winter and want some skiing!

You can also book any tour through Viator if you want a more personalized experience with a local taking you through the area! Check out the tours available through Viator!

Getting to Ljubljana from the Airport (if you aren’t renting a car):

If you aren’t renting a car, getting into Ljubljana from the airport is best done by bus! There’s a shuttle bus that will bring you to the bus station in the city. Everything is pretty much within walking distance from this station.

Unless you arrive late at night as I did, then you have to pay a very hefty penny for a taxi. So try to time it right so you can take the bus!

There is just so much to see and do in this country. Slovenia would also be the perfect road trip country!

So if you are visiting Slovenia, I do recommend renting a car — even though it’s not necessary, I came without a rental car.

Slovenia is often skipped altogether as people are exploring Eastern Europe. However, it really makes a great addition to visiting popular destinations like Croatia (which is what I did), so a perfect addition to a roadtrip! Check out how you can make a 10 day Slovenia and Croatia itinerary with my blog post!

Slovenia does require an IDP from US drivers, so if you are planning on road tripping just make sure you have that beforehand and you are good to go!

Be sure to stop for a Slovenian Vignette pass when entering Slovenia, or first thing after you start driving in the country. This will get you through the tolls throughout the country. If not, you have to pay a large fine!

I hope you get to travel to Slovenia. And I hope you get there before it starts to become the new hot spot of Europe. This country seriously has so much to offer. I was completely unaware of how remarkable Slovenia was until I traveled here on a whim.
