However, the Agafay Desert is a great option if you are short on time, as it is only about 45 minutes from Marrakech and can be visited as a day trip or for a quick overnight.

Agafay offers really beautiful, luxury campsites (some with a pool even), but it has rocky terrain instead of the iconic sand dunes you’ll find in the Sahara.

• Choose Agafay if you want a quick desert experience near Marrakech, or your itinerary does not have the time needed to visit the Sahara
• Choose the Sahara if you want the most authentic desert adventure that will make you feel like you’re in the movie Dune

Agafay Desert is about 45 minutes outside of Marrakech. Agafay offers a desert experience that is way more accessible for travelers short on time. While it’s often marketed as a desert escape from the city, Agafay looks very different from the iconic sand dunes most people imagine when they think of the Sahara Desert.

Instead of towering dunes, Agafay is a rocky, lunar-like desert landscape made up of rolling hills and dry earth. Think Mars. A major pro to Agafay is that on clear days, you can see the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains in the distance.

Despite the lack of sand dunes, Agafay has become popular for its luxury desert camp experiences. Many camps offer glamping-style tents, swimming pools, and sunset dinners under the stars. You can enjoy activities similar to those in the Sahara, such as camel rides, quad biking, and traditional Moroccan dinners with live music.

What is the Sahara Desert like?

The Sahara Desert is the largest hot desert in the world and offers the classic desert experience most travelers dream about when visiting Morocco. Unlike the rocky landscape of the Agafay Desert, the Sahara is known for its giant sand dunes.

Two of the most popular dune regions to visit in Morocco are Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga, where dunes can average up to 500 feet high. The Sahara really is the picturesque, movie scene sand dunes that everyone imagines when they picture a desert.

A typical Sahara experience involves a multi-day trip from cities like Marrakech or Fes. Along the way, travelers often stop at famous locations such as Ait Benhaddou, Dades Valley, and Todgha Gorge.

Once you reach the dunes, most people ride camels across the sand to reach a desert camp where they spend the night in traditional Berber tents.

While at camp, you can pick from a few activities like sandboarding, watching the sunset and sunrise over the dunes, enjoying traditional Moroccan meals, and stargazing in one of the darkest skies imaginable.

I often look back at the sunrise quad and sandboarding, and think about how bright the stars were during my overnight in the Sahara Desert. There’s just something about saying, “yeah I’ve been sandboarding in the Sahara desert” that just feels special.

While traveling to the Sahara requires more travel time, the reward is an incredible desert adventure that will become a highlight of your travel memories.

Agafay is about a 45 minute drive from Marrakech, making it really easy to get to for people staying in Marrakech. There are a few options to get there:

• Taxi:
  • Grab a taxi, the drive is about 45 minutes from Marrakech!
• Private Tour/Transfer:
  • Arrange a driver ahead of time from Marrakech to Agafay. This is a great option if you are looking to go just for the day, as it will include other excursions within the transfer (camel rides, fire shows, etc).
• Rent a car:
  • Rent a car and drive yourself! This is a great option if you want to make stops along the way and be in control of your own time!
• Transfer with Accommodation:
  • Most accommodations that you book in the Agafay Desert will have an option to book a transfer from Marrakech. So you can arrange that with them upon booking.

Getting to the Sahara Desert:

Getting to the Sahara Desert is most common from both Fes and Marrakech. The main spots to visit in the Sahara are Merzouga and Mhamid.

• Bus:
  • You can take a Supratours bus from Marrakech to Merzouga, which takes about 12.5+ hours.
• Rent a car:
  • You can rent a car and drive yourself! This is a great option if you’re looking to make stops along the way but want more control over your time than a guided tour offers.
• Guided Tour to the Sahara Desert:
  • It is common to book tours with pickup in one city and drop-off in another. I booked a 3-day Sahara tour with pickup in Marrakech and drop-off in Fes. To me, this is such a great way to experience not only the Sahara, but Morocco. The tours are designed to make the 8-10 hour drive feel so short by giving you so many stops along the way.
  • This is my top pick, because this is such a highlight travel memory for me. You just can’t experience things like this everywhere, it’s truly a bucket list activity.

Cost Comparison

When you’re making the choice of Agafay vs Sahara Desert, cost obviously comes into play. Because the Sahara requires multiple days of travel and accommodations, it is generally more expensive than visiting Agafay.

However, the overall value depends on the type of experience you’re looking for. Agafay offers a more convenient, luxurious desert experience near Marrakech, while the Sahara offers a much more immersive adventure across multiple days.

The price really depends on what you’re willing to book, as there are so many options between the two locations.

Best Desert Camps in Agafay Desert

• Kasbah d’if: I’d move in if I could. This would be a dream home for me. The pool overlooking the desert is chef’s kiss.
• Alkamar Camp Agafay: I just can’t get over the dining room of this place. There isn’t anything much better than a room full of windows paired with Moroccan food and hospitality.
• Oxygen Lodge Agafay: I really don’t know how people make tents look better than my house, but they did it.
• Agafay Desert: The “tents” are beautiful globes which giant windows in the front. If you haven’t seen the stars away from city lights, it’s something special. The windows would make this so magical at night.

Best Desert Camps in the Sahara Desert

I personally recommend booking a 3 or 4-day tour to the Sahara Desert, which will include your stay. And just upgrade to the luxury camp, because how often do you sleep in the Sahara Desert?

But, if you drive yourself, here are some options for where to stay:

• Sunrise Sahara Camp: Honestly, the main reason I regret booking a tour was that I didn’t get to handpick where I stayed in the Sahara Desert. If I got a chance, this would have been the quickest decision of where to stay.
• Amazing Luxury Camp: The name says it all. I can’t get over how the Moroccan people have made tents feel like little luxury homes.
• Sahara Deluxe Camp: Just reminiscing, walking down a beautiful Moroccan carpet to sit by the fire under the stars in the middle of giant sand dunes in the Sahara Desert…the life.

Is Agafay worth visiting?

Agafay Desert is worth visiting if:

• You are looking for a high-luxury experience. I mean, truly, the camps there are just insanely beautiful.
• You are short on time but want a desert experience.
• Long travel days are not for you.

Final Verdict: Agafay vs Sahara Desert

Choose the Agafay Desert if:

• you only have 1–2 days
• you want a quick trip from Marrakech
• you prefer luxury camps

Choose the Sahara Desert if:

• you want massive sand dunes
• you want a true desert adventure
• you have 3–4 days available

My personal pick in the Agafay vs Sahara Desert battle is….the Sahara Desert, hands down! While Agafay offers higher luxury, the sand dunes in the Sahara desert are really just unlike anything you will ever see, and you won’t be able to get that in Agafay.

In fact, I would rearrange my Moroccan itinerary just to experience the adventure of traveling to and sleeping in the Sahara Desert.

However, if you are short on time in Morocco, Agafay offers a really unique travel stay. And at the end of the day, experiencing Moroccan hospitality in a desert-like environment would still be special!
