How to Get to Lake Atitlan from Antigua
Option 1: Shuttle Services
One of the most convenient and popular ways to reach Lake Atitlan from Antigua is by using shuttle services. These shuttles typically depart in the morning from various points in Antigua, making the trip smooth and hassle-free.
They’ll take you directly to your chosen destination on Lake Atitlan, whether it’s Panajachel, San Pedro la Laguna, or any other village. This option will be more budget friendly. If you are staying at a hostel or a hotel, you can check for timing.
Option 2: Rental Car Adventure
If you prefer a more flexible and adventurous journey, renting a car is another viable option. The scenic drive from Antigua to Lake Atitlan is roughly 2-3 hours, depending on your chosen route.
You’ll enjoy the freedom to stop at viewpoints, visit small towns, and explore the surrounding areas.
Just keep in mind that road conditions may vary, and some routes may be better than others. Plus, if you plan on checking out La Casa Del Mundo – there won’t be parking there so that is something to consider.
Option 3: Private Transfer
If you’re traveling in a larger group or with lots of luggage, consider a private transfer. They’re pricier than shuttles but offer comfort and convenience. You can arrange a private driver to pick you up from Antigua and take you directly to Lake Atitlan without any detours.
Uber works well in Guatemala!
Note: The Chicken Bus – Not Recommended but an option if you choose
While adventurous souls may be tempted to hop on the colorful “chicken bus” (old school buses transformed into public transportation), I don’t recommend it. The chicken bus ride from Antigua to Lake Atitlan can be a bumpy, uncomfortable, and time-consuming experience.
It’s better suited for shorter distances or for travelers seeking a true local experience. If you are on a tight budget, I would still choose the shuttle service over this option.
How to Get to Lake Atitlan from Guatemala City
Option 1: Shuttle Services
Shuttle services also run between Guatemala City and Lake Atitlan. These depart from the city’s airport and various pickup points, providing a convenient link to the lake.
The ride takes around 4-5 hours, depending on traffic and your final destination.
Option 2: Rental Car Adventure
The drive from Guatemala City to Lake Atitlan is around 2.4-4 hours (depending on traffic and stops), which is definitely manageable!
While renting a car gives you the freedom, similar to above, just keep in mind the road conditions as well as parking situation at your destination in Lake Atitlan.
Option 3: Private Transfer
I definitely think this is a good choice if you’re traveling with a group or have specific requirements. Or if you are traveling solo and you miss the shuttle from the airport.
This option takes between 2.5-4 hours, depending on traffic and stops.
We had missed the last shuttle of the day, so private transfer was our only option outside of the rental car. But, I’d take the private transfer again.
Uber works well in Guatemala! Or you can book from a stand in the airport.
When planning your trip to Lake Atitlan, consider the options that best suit your preferences, budget, and group size. While the chicken bus can be a fun adventure on some routes, it’s best to avoid it when heading to Lake Atitlan for a more comfortable and efficient journey. Enjoy your trip and soak in the beauty of Lake Atitlan – you’re in for an unforgettable experience!
